"Very few of us listen directly to what is being said, we always translate or interpret it according to a particular point of view, whether Hindu, Muslim or communist."
(Hobby: or whatever may be our own particular ideology, conditioning, or vested interest)
"We have formulations, opinions, judgements, beliefs through which we listen, so we are actually never listening at all; we are only listening in terms of our own particular prejudices, conclusions, or experiences.
We are always interpreting what we hear, and obviously that does not bring about understanding.
What brings about understanding, surely, is to listen without any anchorage, without any definite conclusion, so that you and I can think out the problem together, whatever the problem may be."

Although i agree that perhaps one needs to really listen first before starting to interpret things), IMO interpretation/reading between the lines is still important, esp in order to find out what could be the hidden agenda(s). I feel a number of people who are a fan of ASTV or Manager online, or , at the other end, pro-Taksin sites/ news sources probably believe most of what they hear or read unthinkingly, and that's the big problem. sometimes when u read or hear what u want to believe, it's easier to be convinced.
Agree about Manager/ASTV readers/watchers, but I also think it applies to all of us, and not only in political discussions/arguments, but also in personal relationships.
I am a strong believer in continued dialogue
to solve problems - if people can keep talking they will eventually come to understand each other.
sometimes 'silence is golden' IMO :-)
As long as that silence does not lead to this:)
this song celebrate silence i think: :-)

I think its more a love song, than about silence, but it is a nice song
(its soppy but I still don't mind listening to it - occasionally:)
As for Irish singers, I prefer this guy
Here's a better version of the last song
btw, I'd say the song I posted is a love song too, but for some reason I dont think Shane McGowan ever gets soppy (though he might often seems sloppy:)
